Top run scorers in First-Class Cricket

Couple of years back i started to list out Sri Lanka’s top run scorers in First-Class cricket. It took me almost three months to complete it. After the recently concluded tier B domestic tournament, i updated the list and tweeted this;

So, i thought to publish a pdf document, consisting only the top 30 entries of highest run scorers. I’ve added Gehan Mendis as well. He is technically a British player and played few domestic matches in Sri Lanka in 1980s. BCCSL offered him to play for Sri Lanka few times, but he rejected those.

100 Years ago Doctor C.H. made his First-Class debut

Doctor Churchil Hector Gunasekara was the first Ceylonese origin player to represent a county team. He made his debut in 1919 , 02nd of June against Lancashire. C.H.’s match figures was 62/2 (19/1 -1st | 43/1 – 2nd). His victims were James Tyldesley (9) & former Test batsman Johnny Tyldesley (Both are not related but Johnny’s brother Earnest, also a test cricketer played in this match) He also scored 18 in the first innings and 2 in the 2nd. Tommy Kelaart’s 1000 to Dinuk Hettiarachchi’s 1000

Former test spinner Dinuk Hettiarachchi nearing to the 1000th wicket in First-Class cricket. Dinuk is a one test wonder for Sri Lanka and his career spans over 25 years. Dinuk is currently on 998 and needs just two wickets to reach this amazing milestone.

Spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan (1374) & Rangana Herath (1080) are the only other Sri Lankans to claim 1000 wickets in First-Class Cricket.

But, Who was the first Sri Lankan or Ceylonese player to take 1000 wickets when considering all other forms of cricket ? That’s Thomas Kelaart (Tommy), greatest spinner/medium fast bowler ever to play during the early stage of Ceylon Cricket. He represented Colts Cricket Club in between 1890 – 1920. Never played a First-Class but was a legendary icon in Club Cricket.

Ambidextrous Sri Lankan Test Cricketers

Hello,

This is my very first blog post of this new platform. Please comment your suggestions, and any interesting detail to follow on. Anyhow, I’ve prepared a list of ambidextrous test cricketers from Sri Lanka few days back and the result was interesting.

  • 16- Left Hand Bat / Right Arm Spin
  • 11- Left Hand Bat / Right Arm Pace
  • 04- Right Hand Bat / Left Arm Pace
  • 10- Right Hand Bat / Left Arm Spin
  • 01- Right Hand Bat / Left Arm Spin/ Left Arm Pace
  • 01- L.H. Bat / Right Arm Spin / Left Arm Spin
  • 01- L.H. Bat / Right Arm Spin / Right Arm Pace
  • 18- Bowling action is not known or doubtful

In fact i had doubts with 18 cricketers. Most of them either a Wicket keeper or a Pure Batsman (i.e., Roshan Mahanama etc.). Hashan Tilakaratne is the only Sri Lankan cricketer to bat Left and using both arms to bowl. There were two players who used to bowl as a spinner or as a pacer time to time.

This was just to find such players and i will surely post the pdf ASAP.
